On July 28, ICON, one of the world's largest contract research organisations, announced a multi-year collaboration with Anthropic to bring Claude's capabilities into clinical development. The partnership builds on Orbis, ICON's existing agentic AI platform, and will develop four production capabilities: site intelligence and study planning that sharpens ICON's OneSearch and OnePlan tools, predictive intelligence for real-time enrolment risk detection across active studies, protocol optimisation to reduce amendments and speed up study startup, and ecosystem integration that lets clients access ICON's insights directly inside Claude.
ICON is rolling out Claude across the organisation by role: Claude Code for developers, Claude for knowledge teams, and Claude Science for scientific and clinical staff. CEO Barry Balfe framed the goal as combining ICON's trial-delivery expertise with frontier AI to help sponsors make decisions earlier and execute studies with more precision. Anthropic's Pip White pointed to enrolment as one of the clearest openings, noting that it causes delays in up to 80% of trials.
This is a large CRO putting a named frontier AI lab's models into the operational core of how trials get planned and run. It puts ICON alongside a small group of CROs and sponsors that have moved past chatbot-level AI use toward embedding models directly into the systems that decide which sites get selected and how protocols get built.

A new public-private partnership funded by Germany's Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space launched on July 23 to accelerate antibiotic discovery. Antares brings together Fraunhofer ITMP, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and Enamine Deutschland, training AI models on public datasets and refining them through iterative rounds of high-throughput testing. The project also applies explainable AI to surface structure-activity relationships and will use generative models to propose new antibiotic candidates, aiming to address a category where the commercial return on new drug development has been thin for years.
Cambridge-based TidalSense closed a $19 million round on July 24, led by new investor Cross-Border Impact Ventures alongside returning backers BGF, Airstream Capital and Foresight Group, bringing total funding to $40 million. Its N-Tidal Diagnose platform reads a carbon dioxide breath waveform from 75 seconds of normal breathing and uses AI to flag COPD in under five minutes, without traditional spirometry. The funds go toward commercialisation across the UK, Ireland and Europe, preparation for a US launch, and expansion into other respiratory conditions including asthma.
Steriline introduced two AI technologies for sterile injectable and ophthalmic manufacturing: OmniAI Vision, which uses a small number of strategically placed cameras for real-time image analysis, and OptiLAIN, which handles continuous system monitoring and predictive maintenance. The company frames the pairing as a step toward more autonomous fill-finish lines, built to meet the AI-specific requirements of the EU's new Annex 22 guidance alongside Annex 1.
Peli BioThermal and PAXAFE announced a partnership on July 28 pairing Peli's Crēdo Vault, CrēdoGO and DV10 shippers with PAXAFE's logistics intelligence platform for lane planning, real-time visibility and predictive analytics. The combination spans 90 countries and is built around GDP and GMP compliance requirements, reflecting a broader shift in pharma cold chain from retrospective temperature logging toward AI systems that anticipate delays and excursions before they happen.
RadNet subsidiary DeepHealth received FDA 510(k) clearance on July 30 for DeepHealth Breast Ultrasound, an AI tool that automates lesion detection, characterisation and reporting. A multi-reader study with 16 board-certified US radiologists showed over 98% accuracy in lesion localisation, an 8% improvement in breast cancer detection sensitivity, and a 37% cut in radiologist interpretation time. RadNet plans to roll it out across its network by year end, alongside its existing AI mammography tools, covering an estimated 700,000 eligible studies annually.
